Hot Stone Massage

What is Hot Stone Massage?

Hot Stone Massage is a type of massage therapy where the therapist places smooth, heated stones on your body whilst performing classic massage strokes.  The therapist will place the stones of different sizes on various points around your body and also use them in the palms of their hand as they perform the massage.
The stones are formed from basalt, a type of volcanic river rock which has a high iron content, allowing heat to be retained. The flow of the river water has smoothed the stones over time.

How does it work?

Ahead of the treatment, the stones are heated in an electronic water bath to around 120-140 degrees Fahrenheit.  Usually you begin the treatment lying on front and the therapist will start by placing the stones on your body, typically along the spine, in your palms, on your legs, with smaller stones between your toes.  As the stones gradually cool, the therapist will remove and replace with other heated stones.  When you are lying on your back, stones can be placed on your abdomen and forehead.   As you lie with the stones on you, the therapist will begin to perform classic massage strokes whilst holding stones in their palms.  Holding the stones allows the therapist to apply deeper pressure to the muscles.

What is Hot Stone Massage good for?

The heat from the stones warms the muscles, helping to ease tension and soreness and allowing the therapist to work deeper. This is particularly beneficial where muscles are very tense.  The stones will begin easing any muscle tension whilst the therapist is working on other parts of the body.  Placing them along the spine is also said to invoke positive energies throughout the body.

Hot Stone Massage therapy is ideal if you have a lot of tension in your body, perhaps due to playing sport, sitting at a desk all day or from high stress levels.  This type of therapy is also ideal for those with fibromyalgia, insomnia and back pain. The heat from the stones is also very comforting and brings about a sense of calm, ideal if you are suffering with depression and anxiety.

A Hot Stone Massage is not suitable if you have diabetes, circulatory disorders including high blood pressure and Raynaud’s disease or if you are pregnant.  If you are menopausal and have frequent hot flushes then it may be advisable not to have a Hot Stone Massage at this time.
